byOctober 2, 2020
She first found stardom as Patsey in 12 Years A Slave, before her role as feisty Nakia in Black Panther catapulted her to worldwide fame.
Lupita Nyong' o is now a published author; she has a children's picture book 'Sulwe' which means star in Luo. Sulwe sends a powerful and strong message to girls of color. The 48-page book focuses on the heartwarming and whimsical story of a young girl named Sulwe, who goes on a journey to discover her unique beauty.
The Oscar-winning actress said in an Instagram post that she hopes "it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their skin."
While back Lupita told The New York Times that she struggled with her complexion and self-image as a child.
Lupita went on to point out that, even at a young age, girls are taught that light skin is preferred over dark skin and that books like Sulwe can help to encourage self-love for darker-skinned girls everywhere. "Colorism, society's preference for lighter skin, is alive and well. It's not just a prejudice reserved for places with a mostly white population. Throughout the world, even in Kenya, even today, there is a popular sentiment that lighter is brighter.
The now-36-year-old actress sees her book as a mirror for dark-skinned children to see a reflection of themselves and feel beautiful inside and out;
"I imagined what it would have been like for this little girl to turn the pages of her picture books and see more dark skin in a beautiful light. This book is my dream come true for kids like her today . . . Sulwe holds up a mirror for dark-skinned children, especially, to see themselves reflected immediately, and it is a window for all the others to cherish peering into."
The good news,Lupita just posted on her Instagram the book is finally available here at home;
"#Sulwe is coming home, at last! You can now find editions in Kenya in English, Swahili and my mother tongue, Luo. My childhood inspired Sulwe's story. I hope the book's message can continue to travel the world for readers of all ages, but it's especially meaningful to bring it home!🇰🇪 #BrightnessIsJustWhoYouAre #SulweHomecoming"
The Oscar-winning actress added;
“Hatimaye, #Sulwe anakuja nyumbani. Hadithi ya Sulwe, iliyohamasishwa na maisha yangu ya utotoni, sasa inapatikana Kenya kwa matoleo ya Kiingereza, Kiswahili na lugha yangu pendwa, Kijaluo. Natumaini ujumbe wa kitabu hiki utaendelea kusambaa duniani kwa wasomaji wa rika zote. Hasa muhimu kuuleta ujumbe huu nyumbani! 🇰🇪”
We are Proud of you Lupita!
