Adut Akech Bior isn't your typical woman; she's a beautiful black woman who has made a name for herself in the fashion industry in the shortest time imaginable.
Adut, a South Sudanese-Australian, regularly walks for various brands, including Chanel, Valentino and Givenchy, and starring on the covers of many high profile magazines. Despite her fashion fame, Akech remains deeply aware of the broader world around her and wants to use her voice and platform to create positive change.
The 21-year-old model stirred the African internet scenes after the gap-toothed melanin beauty got featured on Runtown's 'Kini Issue' music video in the cameo. Many don't know that Adut was born on December 25, 1999, in South Sudan. She spent most of her time in Kenya at the Kakuma Refugee Camp.
She told Vogue; "That's where I spent the first seven or eight years of my life. We didn't know what a magazine was, and we didn't know much about fashion.… I only discovered the love that I had for fashion when I moved to Australia." Still, she looks back on her time in Kenya fondly. "Before I'm anything else, I am a refugee, and I'm so proud of that,"
On the other hand, Adut sees Naomi Campbell as her second mother, who helped become who she is today after taking her under her wings by being her first family in New York.
Adut started walking the runway when she was 13 years old and used to go by a different name in Australia "Mary", which is her mother's name because teachers couldn't pronounce her name correctly. As soon as she entered the fashion industry, she quickly reverted to her name, Adut Akech.
