Kim Kardashian West has the most extensive online following with her 188Million Instagram followers, and 29Million likes on her Facebook page. That said, she has pledged to boycott Facebook’s two social media sites for one day to draw attention to what they say is a failure on Facebook’s part to address hate speech posted on the platforms adequately.
Kim announced she would be temporarily “Freezing” her Facebook and Instagram accounts the following day to raise awareness for ‘Stop Hate For Profit’ a group dedicated to encouraging Facebook to take tangible steps to address misinformation and hate speech.
Other Celebrities joining Kardashian West are, Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Campbell, Ashton Kutcher, Amy Schumer, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry, among others. They have pledged to hold off on Instagram and Facebook posts Wednesday in support of the campaign.
Kim posted on her Instagram;
“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation - created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed. Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy.”
She went ahead and requested people to join her;
“Please join me tomorrow when I will be “freezing” my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit. Link in bio for more info on how to preserve truth.”
